What is a hallucination?
Perception in the absence of an external stimulus
What is an illusion?
Misinterpretation of real stiumli
What is a delusion?
Fixed (often false) belief that is inappropriate to the patient’s socio-cultural background.
What is an overvalued idea?
Unreasonable, sustained belief that is held with less than delusional intensity
What is psychosis?
Thoughts, affective response or ability to recognize reality and the ability to communicate and relate to others are sufficiently impaired to interfere with a person’s daily function

What is flight of ideas?
Jumps from topic to topic, but with recognizable links such as rhyming, punning or environmental distractions
What is pressure of speech?
Very rapid speech with little cohesion between words or topics
What is loosening of association?
Patient’s speech is muddled, illogical, difficult to follow and cannot be clarified. The patient talks freely but so vaguely that no information is given.
What is knights move thinking?
Jumps from topic to topic with no connection between them
What is tangential thinking?
Wandering from the topic and never returning to it
What is circumstantiality?
Inability to answer question without giving long winded/detailed answers
What is a Neologism?
Making up new words or changing the meaning of existent ones
