Thorasic Spine Flashcards
Explain the curve of the thorasic spine
It is a kyphotic curve and is a priamry curve
Describe the structure of a thorasic vertebra.
- spinous process are pointed more downwards
- lamina
- Transverse process provide the articualtion for the rib
- pedicle
- Vertebral body providde articualtion for rib
- Vertebral canal
- Vertebral foramen
What movements occur at the Thorasic spine?
Flexion
Extension
Side flexion
Rotation
How mamny ribs are there and where do they articulate?
There are 12 ribs
Ribs 1–7 are true ribs which articulate with the sternum
Ribs 8-10 articualte with the costal cartilidge
11-12 dont articulate
What are the two unique joints in the thorasic spine?
Costotransverse - Articulation between the rib and the transverse process
Costovertebral Joint - Articulation between the rib and the vertebral body
What ligament supports the Costotransverse and costovertebral joint?
The costotransverse ligament fills the gap between rib and corresponding transverse process
Which muscles contribute to Flexion of Thorasic spine
Rectus abdominis
Int/ext obliques
Psoas major
Extension of the thorasic spine
Erector spinae
Multifidus
Quad lumborum
Side flexion of thorasic
Quaf Lumborum
Ext/Int oblique
Rotation
Int/Ext oblique
Rectus Abdominis (A)
M - Long muscle of the anterior abdominal wall
O - Pubic symphysis pubic crest
I - Xiphoid process and costal cartilidge of ribs 5-7
N - Intercostal and Subcostal nerve
A - Thorasic flexion and compression of abdominal viscera
Erector Spinae (a)
M - Long muscle spanning the length of the spine divided into 3 parts
Spinalis - most medial of the muscle groups
Longissimus - intermediate
Iliocostalis - most lateral
A - Extesnion and lateral flexion of teh spine
N - All supplied by the anterior Rami
Multifidus (a)
M - Short triangular muscles taht make up the deep back muscles
O - Transverse process of the thorasic vertebra
I - Lateral aspect of the spinous processes of the vertebra 2-5 levels superior from its origin
A - Extension and Bilateral flexion
N - Medial branches of the poseterior rami
Psoas Major (A)
M - Fusiform muscle within the lumbar trunk
O - Body’s and intervertbral disc of T12- L4. Transverse of L1-5
I - Lesser trochanter of femur
A - Flexion of the trunk, lateral flexion
N - Anterior rami
