Thoracic Wall Muscles Flashcards
Sternocleidomastoid Origin
lateral surface of mastoid process of temporal bone and lateral half of superior nuchal line
Sternocleidomastoid Insertion
Sternal head: anterior surface of manubrium of sternum
Clavicular head: superior surface of medial third of clavicle
Sternocleidomastoid Innervation
spinal accessory nerve (CN XI; motor), C2 and C3 nerves (pain and proprioception)
Sternocleidomastoid Action
Unilateral – laterally flexes neck and rotates if so face is turned superiorly toward opposite side
Bilateral – extend neck at atlantooccipital joint; flexes cervical vertebrae; extend superior cervical vertebrae while flexing inferior vertebrae; may elevate manubrium
Sternocleidomastoid Arterial Supply
Occipital, posterior auricular (ear), superior thyroid, and suprascapular arteries
Serratus Posterior Superior Origin
Nuchal ligament, spinous processes of C7 to T3 vertebrae
Serratus Posterior Superior Insertion
Superior borders of 2nd to 4th ribs
Serratus Posterior Superior Innervation
2nd to 5th intercostal nerves
Serratus Posterior Superior Action
Proprioception (elevate ribs)
Serratus Posterior Superior Arterial Supply
upper posterior intercostal arteries
Serratus Posterior Inferior Origin
Spinous processes of T11 to L2 vertebrae
Serratus Posterior Inferior Insertion
Inferior borders of 8th to 12th ribs near their angles
Serratus Posterior Inferior Innervation
Anterior rami to T9 to T12 thoracic spinal nerves
Serratus Posterior Inferior Action
Proprioception (depress ribs- forced expiration)
Serratus Posterior Inferior Arterial Supply
lower posterior intercostal arteries and subcostal artery
Levatores costarum Origin
Transverse processes of C7-T11
Levatores Costarum Insertion
Subjacent ribs between tubercle and angle
Levatores Costarum Innervation
Posterior primary rami of C8-T11 nerves
Levatores Costarum Action
Elevate ribs
Levatores Costarum Arterial Supply
posterior intercostal arteries
