Anal Triangle Muscles Flashcards
Coccygeus Origin
ischial spine
Coccygeus Insertion
inferior end of sacrum and
coccyx
Coccygeus Innervation
branches of S4 and S5
Coccygeus Action
forms part of pelvic diaphragm to
support pelvic viscera, flexes coccyx
Coccygeus Arterial Supply
inferior vesical, inferior
gluteal and internal pudendal arteries
(branches of the internal iliac artery)
Levator Ani Origin
body of pubis, tendinous arch of levator ani, ischial spine
Levator Ani Insertion
perineal body, coccyx, anococcygeal ligament, walls
of prostate or vagina, anal canal
Levator Ani Innervation
nerve to the levator ani (S4), inferior anal nerve
(S2-S4) , coccygeal plexus
Levator Ani Action
helps support pelvic viscera, resists increase in intra-
abdominal pressure
Levator Ani Arterial Supply
inferior vesical, inferior gluteal and internal
pudendal arteries (branches of the internal iliac artery)
Obturator Internus Origin
Pelvic surface of ilium and ischium; obturator membrane
Obturator Internus Insertion
medial surface of greater
trochanter (trochanteric fossa) of
femur
Obturator Internus Innervation
Nerve to the obturator
internus (L5, S1)
Obturator Internus Action
laterally rotate extended hip
joint; abduct flexed hip joint; steady
femoral head in acetabulum
(stabilizes hip joint)
Obturator Internus Arterial Supply
obturator artery
Piriformis Origin
anterior surface of 2nd -4th sacral
segments; superior margin of greater
sciatic notch and sacrotuberous ligament
Piriformis Insertion
superior border of greater
trochanter of femur
Piriformis Innervation
anterior rami of S1 and S2
Piriformis Action
laterally rotate extended hip
joint; abduct flexed hip joint; steady
femoral head in acetabulum (stabilizes
hip joint)
Piriformis Arterial Supply
superior and inferior
gluteal arteries
Psoas Major Action
acting inferiorly with the
iliacus, flexes the thigh; acting
superiorly, flexes the vertebral column
laterally to help with posture and
balance
Psoas Major Insertion
Lesser trochanter of femur
Quadratus Lumborum Course
-12th rib, lumbar vertebrae to iliac crest
- Passes under lateral arcuate ligament
Quadratus Lumborum Action
Assists in lateral flexion of the
vertebral column
