Thoracic Limb Conditions Flashcards
What structures are compromised with MSS/MSI? (3)
MGHL, Subscap, Capsule
Describe moderate MSI
painful with empty end feel
Disruption of passive stabilizers
Mild instability
Describe severe MSI
65-90 deg abd
painful with empty end feel
What are the defining characteristics of shoulder tendinopathies?
Pain
Non-inflammatory
Worse after activity
Nonresponsive to NSAIDs
How are shoulder tendinopathies treated surgically?
Surgical: removal of mineralized portions, tenodesis (biceps), tendon release
How are shoulder tendinopathies treated non-surgically?
Ther ex (isometrics to eccentrics), neuro re-ed, avoid certain activities, controlled return to activity, stimulate tissue healing with modalities, collagen fiber realignment (CFM, shockwave)
Elbow dysplasia is an umbrella term for four different pathologies. What are they?
- Fractured medial coronoid
- Ununited anconeal process
- OCD (medial humeral condyle)
- Incongruity
How does elbow dysplasia generally present? (4)
- Common in young large breed dogs (but can be any)
- TL lameness
- Elbow effusion
- Decreased ROM
How do we conservatively manage elbow OA?
Weight management, modalities, manual therapy, ther ex, joint supplements (beyond the scope of PT)
How do we treat carpal hyperextension conservatively?
Surgically?
- Support (orthosis), rehab
- Arthrodesis
How does FCU injury present?
- Usually in large or agility dogs
- Swelling over the accessory carpal
- TTP of FCU tendon
How does SDF tear present?
Long toe, since SDF connects at P2, there is nothing holding it in flexion
How does DDF tear present?
Toes point up a bit more
What is the risk of untreated tears of SDF/DDF affecting multiple digits?
Carpal hyperextension
