English colony in which the king gave land to proprietors in exchange for a yearly payment.

Colony under the direct control of the English crown.

Group of people who settle in a distant land but are still ruled by the government of their native land.

Boundary line between Pennsylvania and Maryland. It divided the Middle Colonies from the Southern Colonies.

Pennsylvania
Why were slaves important to plantation owners?
They did most of the work and were not paid at all

A willingness to let others practice their own beliefs.
What was the purpose of the town meeting?
Gave settlers a chance to speak their minds; they discussed and voted on many issues.
How did New Netherland become New York?
Problems between the Dutch and the English became worse, and in 1664 the English took over New Amsterdam.
Why did New Jersey become a proprietary colony?
After the Duke of York decided that his NY colony was too big to govern he gave some of NY’s land to friends.
Why was Georgia called a “haven for debtors”?
James Oglethorpe, offered to pay passage for debtors to travel to Georgia for a fresh start.
Why did New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston become centers for world trade?
They were all located near the water and had large harbors

English sailors referred to the passage of slave ships across the Atlantic as the Middle Passage.
