Thirst and hunger Flashcards
Thirst need drive
Loss of water volume and maintain ion levels
Hunger signal causes
stomach fullness, nutrient levels and a combination
Satiety signals
Signals that tell the brain to stop eating like stomach stretch
Chemical signals
glucose and lipid receptors inform the brain when it needs more
Leptin
a protein that is released from fat cells when they grow larger telling us to stop eating
Lateral hypothalamus
part of the hypthalamus that controls thirst and hunger signals
Ventromedial region of the hypothalamus
controls satiety and stops people from over eating
Dual-centre theory
one area serves to inhibit the area of the opposite function
Brain pathways involved with eating
reward, punishment, disgust, visual, olfactory,VHM, LH, and gustatory
body weight set point
the idea that we each have an individual weight that our body fights to maintain
