Third Lecture Flashcards
What causes Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM)?
Naegleria Foweli.
What’s the form of naegleria fowlei which is found in tissues?
Amoeboid form, which is the infective stage.
How does a person become infected by naegleria fowlei?
Through nasal route by swimming in contaminated water. The parasite invades the nasal mucosa and the cribriform plate reaching the brain through the olfactory nerves.
Why is PAM usually misdiagnosed?
Due to short course of the disease, fulminant disease and difficult isolation of naegleria fowlei.
Leucocytosis occurs in PAM. Yes or No?
Yes. And absence of bacteria indicates PAM.
What’s the treatment of PAM?
Amphotericin B and miconazole/rifampicin
What diseases does acanthamoeba cause?
Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis in debilitated patients, and acanthamoebic keratitis in healthy individuals.
What’s the mode of infection in GAE?
CNS infection isn’t associated with swimming in contaminated water but through hematogenous spread from an infection elsewhere most likely lower respiratory tract infection.
What’s the treatment of GAE?
Ketoconazole and surgery.
What’s the mode of infection in acanthamoeba keratitis?
Direct contact of the cornea with contaminated water or soft eye contacts
What’s the treatment of AK?
Topical miconazole and oral itraconazole.
