Thinking Flashcards
What two processes are involved in not thinking of something?(ironic process’s)
-intentional search for distraction
-automatic monitoring for thought
Why is it called ironic processes?
because it is more prone to disruption
Controlled processing
-SAS
-control of conscious attention required for new tasks
-more accurate
Automatic processing
-CS
-Control of well learned actions
-Tends to require fewer attention
-more mistakes
Interpersonal Dilemmas
-utilitarian judgment
-morality based on consequences
Personal dilemma
-deontology judgement
-morality bases on actions
Moral Intuitionist model
-moral judgement is based automatically, not off of outcome
Representativeness heuristic
-Judging the probability of something fitting into a stereotype
-involves the base rate neglect
Conjunction fallacy
-less likely to be two things
Avalibility Heuristic
-Judging frequency based on ease of examples
-probability neglect
Anchoring effect
-how things are framed affects judgement
eg. 5% ineffective vs 95% effective
Attributions
The inferences people make about the
causes of events and behaviour (e.g., Why didn’t my partner
call?)
Conformation bias
-tendency to search for things that fit within existing belief
Concept
mental representation of something
Exemplar
representation of a category
real example
Prototype
a mental representation of an average category member
combination
Nodes
circles that represent concepts
Links
connect nodes together and represent the structure of a category as well as the relationships between categories
Priming
activation of individual concepts in long term memory
Anthropometrics
measuring mental and physical variation in humans
Intelligent
The ability to think, understand, reason, and adapt to or overcome obstacles
Binet
decided that the iq was to test mental age
eg.average iq of age of 7= mental age of 7
Stanford-Binet test
determine inmate level of intelligence
Deviation IQ
calculated by comparing score to average for the age
Ravens Progressive Matrices
iq test based off of pictures not words to remove language and cultural biases
Entity Theory
intelligence is fixed and difficult or even impossible to fix
Incremental Theory
intelligence is shape by experiences, practice and effort
Spermen
developed technique to show correlation between mental abilities
eg.calculus, algebra, geometry= numerical skills
General Intelligence Factor(g)
Spearmen believed g represented someones mental energy, reflecting his belief that some brains are more powerful than others
Fluid Intelligence (gf)
a type of intelligence used when solving new tasks or learning new information not based off of previous knowledge
Crystallized Intelligence a (gc)
a type of intelligence based off of previously learned material and skills
