thigh font and medial muscles Flashcards
Rectus femoris
origin: Straight head - upper half of anterior inferior iliac spine
reflected head-ilium superior to acetabulum
insertion: Base of patella and to tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
nerve: Femoral nerve
action: Extensor of knee joint, Flexor of hip joint
Vastus Lateralis
origin: Greater trochanter, lateral lip of gluteal tuberosity, lateral lip of linea aspera
insertion: Base of patella and to tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
nerve: Femoral nerve
action: Extends the knee while standing, walking and running
Vastusmedialis
origin: Intertrochanteric line, greater trochanter, lateral lip of gluteal tuberosity, and lateral lip of linea aspera
insertion: Base of patella and to tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
nerve: Femoral nerve
action: Extends the knee joint,
prevents lateral displacement of patella
rotates femur medially in locking of knee joint steadies of the patella
Vastus Intermedius
origin: Upper 3/4th of anterior and lateral surface of femur shaft
insertion: Base of patella and to tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
nerve: Femoral nerve
action: Extends the knee
Piriformis: It arises from the pelvis, passes through greater sciatic foramen to reach gluteal region
origin: Anterior surface of sacral segments 2–4, sacrotuberous ligament
insertion: Apex of the greater trochanter of the femur
nerve: S1 and S2 nerves
action: Lateral rotator of the hip joint
Superior gemellus
origin: Spine of the ischium
insertion: Medial surface of greater trochanter of femur
nerve: Nerve to obturator internus
action: Lateral rotator of the hip joint
Inferior gemellus
origin: Lower margin of the lesser sciatic notch and upper part part of the ischial tuberosity
insertion: Medial surface of greater trochanter of femur
nerve: Nerve to obturator internus
action: Lateral rotator of the hip joint
Obturator internus:
It forms the lateral wall of the pelvis
origin: Inner surface of the obturator membrane, adjoining pelvic surface of the ischium and ischiopubic ramus
insertion: The two gemulli and tendon of the obturator internus join together to form a tricipital tendon. It crosses the posterior aspect of the neck of the femur, inserted into medial surface of the greater trochanter
nerve: Nerve to obturator internus muscle
action: Lateral rotator of the hip joint
Quadratus femoris
origin: External surface of the ischial tuberosity
insertion: Quadrate tubercle near the middle of the inter-trochanteric crest
nerve: Nerve to quadrates femoris
action: Lateral rotator of the hip joint
Adductor longus
origin: Narrow tendon from front of body of pubis
insertion:Middle third of linea aspera of femur
nerve: Anterior division of obturator nerve
action: Adductors of thigh at hip joint
Adductor brevis
origin: Body of pubis
inferior pubic ramus
insertion: from pectineal line to proximal part of linea aspera
nerve: Obturator nerve
action: Adduction and weak flexion of hip joint
Adductor magnus
origin: nferior pubic ramus, ramus of ischium
Hamstring part: ischial tuberosity
insertion: Gluteal tuberosity, linea aspera, medial supracondylar line
Hamstring part: adductor tubercle
nerve: Adductor part - posterior division of obturator nerve
Hamstring part - tibial part of sciatic nerve
action: Adductor part - adduction of hip
Hamstring part - Extension of hip joint
Gracilis
origin: Body of pubis and inferior ramus of pubis
insertion: Upper part of medial surface of tibia behind Sartorius and in front of semitendinosus
nerve: obturator nerve
action: Flexor and medial rotator of thigh
Weak adductor
Pectineus
origin: Superior ramus of pubis
insertion: pectineal line
nerve: Anterior fibres- fermoral nerve
Posterior fibres - anterior division of obturator nerve
action: Flexor and adductor of thigh
muscles of medial compart.
