thertiary structure- what are domains Flashcards
Domains
Lobal structures with about 100-200 amino acids, they are structurally independent with characteristics of small globular proteins and have specific functions
example of domain functions
catalytic domain, regulatory domain, domain for binding a cofactor, binds substrate initially, then pass it to a different domain
domain categories
alpha (helices), beta(sheets), alpha/beta(both), few secondary structures
alpha/beta
good for making globular proteins
alpha/beta barrels
- most common in enzymes
- really good scaffolding of active site
- has active sits formed by loops from c teriminus, and ends of b-strands
b-sheet twist
twisting is a result of L-amino acidds
Rossman fold
a type of protein topology (the order in which secondary structural features are connected in the protein main chain) with alpha/beta/alpha secondary structures
- binds nucleotides and their derivatives
