Theropods Flashcards
What were Theropods?
Theropods were bipedal dinosaurs that are known for their ferocious teeth and sharp claws. They were all carnivores.
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Tyrannopsaurus Rex is the most popular dinosaur, but was it the biggest theropod? Tyrannosaurus Rex was not the biggest theropod, it followed behind many others like Spinosaurus and Giganotosaurus. Tyrannosaurus Rex lived in the late Cretaceous period and it could likely run up to 17 miles per hour. Lastly, it could eat up to 500 pounds in one bite.
Spinosaurus
Spinosaurus was the biggest theropod to ever walk on land. It was mostly aquatic and ate prehistoric sawfish. It had a large sail on its back and nostrils up high on its snout so it could detect its prey underwater. It was 18 feet tall and 48-52 feet in length. It also lived during the Cretaceous.
Giganotosaurus
Giganotosaurus was a theropod that lived in Argentina. It was 43 feet in length and had a small sail/ridge on its back. It hunted Argentinosaurus and lived during the late Cretaceous period.
Allosaurus
Allosaurus was a theropod that lived during the Jurassic. It hunted Stegosaurus and Diplodocus. It grew up to 38 feet in length and 16 feet tall.
Acrocanthosaurus
Acrocanthosaurus lived in North America during the early Cretaceous. Its tracks were spotted following a group of Sauroposeidon, which it hunted. It grew up to 40 feet in length and 13 feet tall.
Cacharodontosaurus
Carcharodontosaurus was a large theropod that lived in the late Cretaceous hunting Paralititan and Iranosaurus. It lived in Africa along with Spinosaurus. It grew up to 46 feet in length and 13 feet tall.
Nanuqsaurus
Nanuqsaurus was a theropod that hunted Pachyrhinosaurus and lived during the late Creataceous. It was most likely covered with feathers or thick fur. Nanuqsaurus means “polar bear lizard” as it was found in Alaska. It was 8 feet tall and part of the tyrannosauridae family.
Megalosaurus
Megalosaurus was the first dinosaur to be discovered. It lived during the Jurassic. It grew up to 9 feet in height and 30 feet in length.
