Thermodynamics & Enthalpy G.5,6,7 Flashcards
-it was identified that chemical reactions can be studied in terms of the flow of energy
-determine if a certain reaction would need energy to proceed or would require a release of energy
-the study of it also deals on the changes in the state of the system or the properties of the system including temperature, volume, and pressure
(G.5)
Thermodynamics
-heat of a Reaction is associated with the transformation of reactants to products. It is the amount of heat released or absorbed when specified amounts of substances react. The balanced equation showing the associated heat of reaction is called a thermochemical equation
(G.6)
Thermochemical equation
-states that enthalpy change (AH) is independent of the number of steps involved in a reaction
-the same whether the reaction occurs in one step or in a series of steps
-another way of looking at it is to remember that AH is a state function, hence it is inependent of the manner the reaction is carried out, Using Hess’s Law, a chemical reaction can be expressed as a series of reactions, wherein the net reaction is identical to the original reaction
(G.6)
Hess’s law
-measurement of the heat released or absorbed during a physical of chemical process
(G.7)
Calorimetry
-device which can absorb heat
-the amount of heat depends on the specific heat or heat capacity of the substance
(G.7)
