Thermodynamics Flashcards
Why is the temperature in PV=nRT measured in Kelvin?
When pressure or volume of an ideal gas tends to zero, the temperature must tend to zero; the temperature scale with this zero of temperature is the kelvin scale
State any assumptions made in the kinetic theory of gases
Forces between particles are negligible except during collisions. Collisions are perfectly elastic. Time of a collision is negligible compared to time between
collision. Particles occupy negligible volume compared to volume of gas. Large number of molecules in random motion.
Define internal energy.
The sum of the total KE and PE of molecules in a system.
What is pressure?
The force per unit area.
What is absolute zero?
The temperature at which the internal energy of a system is a minimum. 0K
What is Boyle’s Law?
For a system at constant temperature, PV = constant.
What is 1 mole?
The amount of a substance such that there are 6.02 x 10^23 particles present.
What is Avogadro’s constant?
6.02 x 10^23 particles.
What is specific heat capacity?
The amount of heat energy needed to raise 1kg of a substance by 1K.
What is the latent heat of fusion?
The amount of heat energy needed to change 1kg of a solid into a liquid.
What is the latent heat of vapourisation?
The amount of heat energy needed to change 1kg of a liquid into a gas.
What is thermal equilibrium?
There is no net heat flow between objects
