Oscillations Flashcards

1
Q

What happens to the period of SHM if the amplitude of each oscillation decreases over time, and why?

A

No effect on T as T is independent of amplitude in SHM for small amplitude oscillations of pendulum

Q

Plan how you can obtain experimentally the displacement against time graph for an oscillating
mass in the laboratory. Include any steps taken to ensure the graph is an accurate representation of
the motion.

A

Connect a motion sensor to a data logger which sends information on displacement and time to computer. Placed the sensor close to the moving mass to eliminate reflections from other objects. Attach a small reflector to the mass. Start experiment.
Ensure any attached reflector does not cause damping. Use thin supports to reduce reflections.

Q

What is simple harmonic motion?

A

The motion of an object such that its acceleration is directly proportional to the distance from a fixed point
and the direction is always directed to the fixed point.
