Thermochemistry Flashcards
Endothermic
Heat is taken in
Heat of reaction
The heat change which occurs when a reaction takes place according to a given chemical equation
Heat of formation
The heat change which occurs when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states
Heat of combustion
The change in temperature which occurs when one mole of a substance is burned in excess oxygen
Heat of neutralisation
The heat change which occurs when mole mole of H+ ions of an acid is neutralised by one mole of OH- ions from a base
Kilogram calorific value
The amount of heat given off when one kilogram of a fuel is completely burned in oxygen
Bond energy
The energy required to break one mole of covalent bonds and to separate the neutral atoms formed completely from each other
Hess’s Law
The heat change for a given reaction depends on the initial and final states of the system and is independent of the path followed
Law of conservation of energy
Energy is neither created or destroyed but is converted from one form to another
Exothermic
Reaction in which heat is given off
