Thermal remote sensing Flashcards
What are the three mechanisms for energy transfer?
Conduction
Convection
Electromagnetic radiation
How does conduction work?
Conduction occurs when one body (molecule or atom) transfers its kinetic energy to another by colliding with it. Like heating water in a pan.
How does convection work?
The kinetic energy of bodies is transferred from one place to another by physically moving the bodies. An example is the convectional heating of air in the atmosphere in the early afternoon.
Which radiation is the longest? Thermal infrared, Visible or SWIR
Thermal infrared
What are the three key laws which describe the thermal properties of objects?
Planck’s Law
Stefan-Boltzman Law
Weins displacement Law
What does plancks law describe?
The distribution of energy with wavelength as a function of temperature
What does Stefan-Boltzman law describe?
The relationship between the total energy emitted and temperature
What does the Weins displacement law describe?
The spectral distribution of energy as a function of temperature
According to Plancks law- how does the graph appear at short wavelengths?
Steep rise
According to Plancks law- how does the graph appear at long wavelengths?
Long tail
