Electromagnetic radiation (components) Flashcards
What are the components of remote sensing?
Source
Atmospheric interaction
Interaction with the earth’s surface
Sensor
What are the 3 sources of EMR?
Solar
Terrestrial (earth’s surface and objects)
Sensor itself (satellite or ground)
What parts of the EMS are involved in remote sensing?
Visible
Infrared
Microwave
What colour will an object if it reflects all the red, blue and green wavelengths?
White
What colour will an object appear if it absorbs most of the red, blue and green wavelengths?
Black
Why does an object appear a certain colour?
It depends on the combination of red, blue or green wavelengths of visible light it reflects
How are microwaves both passive and active?
Passive- measures energy emitted/reflected
Active- generates their own energy
In what climate would microwave radiation be appropriate?
Rainforest
What is the wavelength range of reflected radiation?
0-4 micrometers
What is the wavelength range of emitted radiation?
3.8-60 micrometers
How does artificial radiation work?
Sends own source of energy (pulse)
Records the back scattered energy- time taken by pulse and strength of echo received from object
The wavelength of energy and time (return signal) can be used to calculate height of object
What features does the atmosphere change when radiation passes through it?
Speed
Frequency
Intensity
Direction
What is scattering ultimately the result of?
The wavelength and size of a molecule
What properties affect the amount of scattering?
Size of a particle
Abundance of a particle
Wavelength of EMR-longer wavelength=less it is affected
Depth of atmosphere
What are the three types of scattering?
Rayleigh, Mie, Non-selective
