Thermal Processes Flashcards
1
Q
In what kind of materials can conduction occur
A
Solids and liquids
2
Q
Describe the process of conduction
A
- Solid/liquid is heated
- Particles vibrate more
- Energy is transferred to adjacent molecules via collisions, transferring energy from hot to cold regions
3
Q
In which materials can convection occur
A
In fluids (liquids and gases)
4
Q
Describe the process of convection
A
- When a section of fluids is heated it becomes less dense
- This causes it to rise
- Denser fluid fallsto take its place, and is then heated, causing it to rise
- This sets up a convection current
5
Q
What kind of materials can transfer infrared radiation
A
Any kind of material; it does not require a medium
6
Q
What is infrared radiation
A
It is an electromagnetic wave
7
Q
What are the best absorbers of infrared radiation
A
Black, dull surfaces
8
Q
What are the best emitters of infraed radiation
A
White, shiny surfaces
9
Q
What factors affect the amount of IR emitted by a body
A
Temperature (higher=more IR) Surface area (larger=more IR)
