Motion Flashcards
What are the three main components of motion?
- speed
- direction
- acceleration
The equation for the average speed
s = d/t
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is a scalar, as it has not a direction.
Velocity is a vector, as it has a direction.
Equation for acceleration
a = v-u/t
What is the gradient of a distance-time graph?
velocity
What does a curved line represent on a distance-time graph?
Acceleration or deceleration
What does the gradient of a velocity-time graph represent?
Acceleration
What does the area under a velocity-time graph represent?
The distance
What does a curved line represent on a velocity-time graph?
Changing acceleration
What does a speed-time graph look like when an object is at rest?
The y-axis (speed)= zero
What does a speed-time graph look like
when an object moves with constant
speed?
A flat line (zero gradient)
What does a speed-time graph look like
when an object is moving with changing
speed?
A non-zero gradient
What is the value of acceleration due to
gravity at the Earth’s surface?
10 m/s2
Explain how terminal velocity is reached
Initially, in free fall, the only force is weight, causing acceleration downwards
As speed increases, air resistance increases
This decreases the resultant force
Eventually, air resistance is equal to the weight, so there is no resultant force, resulting in terminal velocity
What is deceleration?
Negative acceleration ( slowing down or decreasing speed)
