Thermal Physics Flashcards
Conduction
The transfer of heat through particles only
Radiation
The transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves
Convection
The transfer of heat through fluids
Zeroth Law of Thermal Equilibrium
If two systems are in thermal equilibrium with a third system, then they are also in thermal equilibrium with each other
Internal Energy
the sum of the randomly distributed kinetic energy and potential energy of the atoms or molecules in a substance
Specific Heat Capacity
the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg by 1K
Specific Latent Heat of Vapourisation
amount of energy required to convert 1kg of liquid to vapour at its boiling point at constant temperature
Specific Latent Heat of Fusion
amount of energy required to convert 1kg of solid to liquid at its melting point at constant temperature
Thermal Equilibrium
If a hot body and a cool body form a connected system, then energy will be transferred to equalise temperatures (restore thermal equilibrium)
