Booklet 7: Momentum and Collisions Flashcards
Conservation of Momentum
within a closed system, the total momentum before and after collision remains constant in any direction
Inelastic Collisions
kinetic energy is lost
Elastic Collisions
kinetic energy isn’t lost
Perfectly Inelastic
objects stick together upon colliding
Newton’s First Law
an object will remain at rest or at a constant velocity unless it is acted on by an external force
Newton’s Second Law
the resultant force acting on an object is directly proportional to the rate of change of linear momentum, both of which are in the same direction
F=(mv-mu)/t = ma
Newton’s Third Law
when two bodies interact, the forces they exert on each other are equal, opposite and of the same type
