Thermal Decomposition & Precipitaion Flashcards
What is thermal decomposition?
Breaking down a substance with heat to make 2 or more other substances
Give me examples of transition metal carbonates. (which break down on heating)
Copper(||) carbonate
Iron(||) carbonate
Zinc carbonate
In what do transition metal carbonates break down?
They break down into metal oxides
Like -
Carbon dioxide
Copper oxide
How do you know when a metal oxide and a transition metal carbonate reacted together?
The colour change
Thermal decomposition is the reaction here
What is a precipitation reaction?
Where 2 solutions react and an insoluble solid forms
The solid is “precipitated out”
What is the solid form in a precipitation reaction called?
A precipitate
How is an insoluble hydroxide made?
A soluble transition metal compound reacting with sodium hydroxide
- copper(||) sulfate
- iron (||) sulfate
- iron (|||) sulfate
Copper (||) hydroxide is a transition metal hydroxide, what colour does it give of when becoming what it is now?
Blue solid
What is the word and symbol equation for iron(||) sulfate turning into iron(||) hydroxide?
Iron(||) sulfate +
sodium hydroxide
—–>
Iron(||) hydroxide + sodium sulphate
FeSO4 + 2NaOH –> Fe(OH)2 + NaSO4
