Alkali Metals Flashcards
In the periodic table, what group are the alkali metals?
1
Give me 5 names of metals found in group 1 of the periodic table.
Lithium
Potassium
Sodium
Rubidium
Cæsium
What happens as you go down group 1 metals ? Why?
The Alkali metals get more reactive
-outer shell electrons is further away from nucleus - easier to lose - less energy needed to lose
(Atomic radius is larger as you go down group 1 in the periodic table)
How many outer shell electrons do alkali metals have ?
1
Why do all alkali metals have similar properties and are very reactive?
Only have 1 outer shell electron
What are the properties of alkali metals?
Low melting and boiling point
Low density - lithium, potassium, sodium float on water
Very soft - cut with a knife
No covalent bonding . Only ionic bonding (think about it, it’s easier to let go of one electron than share with other atoms to have a full shell)
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons
What happens when alkali metals are mixed with cold water?
Produce hydrogen gas
After a reaction with an alkali metal and water, hydrogen is formed. What is the other compound?
Hydroxide
If it was potassium -
Potassium hydroxide
Which colour does potassium, sodium and lithium give when burn it a blue flame?
Lithium - red
Sodium - yellow
Potassium - lilac/ violet
