Metals Flashcards
How are metals held together?
By metallic bonding
What is metallic bonding?
Metals being held together
Where all the outer shell electrons are free to move around
(Conduct electricity)
What are the 4 main properties of metal?
High melting point and boiling point
- strong metallic bond
Dense
Strong and bendy and malleable
- can be shaped into things
Good conductors of heat and electricity
What is a superconductor metal?
Metals that will conduct their energy by being really cold
(Metals lose their current energy mainly by heat- if they become super conductors by being really cold, No energy will be wasted and current could go on forever even by taking out the battery)
What can you make with superconductor metals? Name 3.
- Power cables without any power loss (lose- free power transmission)
- No energy(heat) will be wasted , power will still be going - Electromagnets (that will not need a constant power source)
- Electronic circuit - works fast (no resistance to slow them down)
What do you need to make a superconductor metal?
a VERY cold temperature
Give me 4 examples of a transition metal.
Copper
Zinc
Gold
Silver
Platinum
Iron
What are the properties of transition metals?
Good for catalysts
Very colourful
