Thermal Conduction Flashcards
1
Q
What is Thermal Conduction?
A
Thermal conduction is the transfer of heat energy through a substance, without the substance itself moving
2
Q
How does conduction move?
A
Conduction moves from the hot end to the cold end
3
Q
Thermal Conduction in Non-Metals
A
The end closest to the heat source warms up and the particles gain energy. The particles vibrate more and collide with the surrounding particles passing on the energy. This repeats until all the particles have the same amount of energy.

Q
Thermal Conduction in Metals
A
Metals are the best conductors of heat. This is because they contain de-localised electrons which are free to move and can carry the heat energy through the metal much more quickly.
