Thermal and carbonless papers Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the product design of a thermal paper!

A

They are coated with a heat reactive coating, when heated a melting process takes place and a chemical reaction takes place causing a black dye to be formed.
Thermal head in printer transfers heat to paper, the amount of energy can create different shades of grey.

Q

How does a carbonless copy paper (NCR paper) work?

A

It is a reaction between 2 different coatings which is triggered by pressure. The backside of the top sheet of paper consists of microcapsules, these contain colourless colour formers which are released when pressure is applied. These release into the absorbent receiver layer of the next sheet, the colour formers react in this layer to become the black copy.
