Sublimation papers Flashcards

1
Q

What are sublimation papers?

A

Transfer papers which are printed with water-based special inks using ink jet technology. This print is then transferred (sublimated) onto different textiles/surfaces at temperatures of around 200C. There are many applications such as decoration, fashion, promotional items.

Q

Why is the market of sublimation papers changing so rapidly?

A

Digital printing is now more readily available which is more favourable than traditional screen printing. It requires smaller investments, can be personalised and be flexible which means it can keep up with fast fashion cycles. Sublimation printing is thought to be more eco friendly as it doesn’t require prior washing so it is easier and cheaper.

Q

How can sublimation papers contribute to a more sustainable future?

A

No washing stage/drying stage is necessary so it saves on water, energy and reduces pollution. The inks are water based which is more eco friendly than acid inks of direct printing.
However it is only applicable for polyester materials which are made of oil and contribute to microplastics. But there is development for further use and polyester can be recycled.

Q

Which coating technologies can be used to produce sublimation papers?

A

Can use swellable or microporous coatings, move towards micro for the faster drying times Swellable technology has a gel like coating which absorbs ink by swelling, the ink stays on top of the coating and results in very vivid colour, however it takes a long time to dry. Microporous coating dries much faster as the ink particles are rapidly absorbed via capillary forces into micropores. The colour isn’t as vivid but it has excellent line sharpness.
