Q

Which raw materials are used for the production of banknote paper and why?

A

Cotton fibres (waste from other processes) – these are extremely long fibres so this really helps with tear strength and fold endurance.
Synthetic fibres – often UV florescent or metallic fibres.

Q

What types of watermarks do you know and how can they be added to paper?

A
  • Cylinder mould watermarks – the fibres are deposited in different quantities during sheet building which variers the thickness of the paper. The image can then be seen when held against light
  • Dandy roll marks – formed by compressing the fibres using the dandy roll while the paper is wet
  • Marks can also be produced using lasers.
  • Molette mark – after the wire section the sheet is compressed between a rubber role with the image and a steel roll to compress.
