Which raw materials are used for the production of banknote paper and why?
Cotton fibres (waste from other processes) – these are extremely long fibres so this really helps with tear strength and fold endurance.
Synthetic fibres – often UV florescent or metallic fibres.
What is a security thread?
An elastic thread that runs throughout the paper. It can either be put between 2 sheets or when touching the mould it can weave in and out of the paper.
What type of security fibers do you know (name 3 different types) and how do they work?
UV fibres
Coloured fibres
metallic fibres
What types of watermarks do you know and how can they be added to paper?
- Cylinder mould watermarks – the fibres are deposited in different quantities during sheet building which variers the thickness of the paper. The image can then be seen when held against light
- Dandy roll marks – formed by compressing the fibres using the dandy roll while the paper is wet
- Marks can also be produced using lasers.
- Molette mark – after the wire section the sheet is compressed between a rubber role with the image and a steel roll to compress.
