- Empathy: the capacity to have warmth & understanding
- Experience: do they have the education/ training/ experience that is required
- Psychologically Healthy: never apply their own feelings to their patients

The analyst’s noting supposed dreams, meanings, resistance, and other significant behaviors and events in order to promote insight

The blocking from consciousness of anxiety - laden material
