Test 2 Quiz 3 Flashcards
Neurotransmitters
Messages that are carried along neurons
Serotonin
Affects mood, hunger, sleep and arousal.
-An undersupply linked to depression(unbalanced)
Dopamine
Influences movement, learning, attention, and emotion.
-An oversupply could be linked to schizophrenia
Acetylcholine(ACh)
Enables muscle action, learning, and memory.
-Alzheimers: ACh producing neurons break down
Norepinephrine
Helps control alertness and arousal.
- Undersupply can oppress mood
Gamma-aminoloutyric Acid / GABA
A major inhibitory neurotransmitters
- An undersupply can cause seizures, tremors, and insomnia
Glutamate
A major excitatory neurotransmitter; involved in memory
- An oversupply can over stimulate your brain, producing migraines or seizures
Endorphins
Neurotransmitters that influence the perception of pain and pleasure.
- An oversupply with opiate drugs can suppress the body’s natural endorphin supply
Endocrine System
The body’s “slow” chemical communication system
Pituitary Gland
Secretes many different hormones, some of which affect other glands
Thyroid Gland
Affects metabolism; secretes a chemical called thryoxine
Thyroxin
Regulates your metabolism
Hyperthyroidism
Oversupply thyroxin; metabolism is very rapid
Hypothyroidism
Undersupply of thyroxin; makes people gain too much weight
Adrenal Gland
Pair of endocrine glands that sits just above the kidneys and secretes hormones( epinephrine and norepinephrine) that help arouse the body in times of stress
