Therapist Factors Flashcards
What is ethical sensitivity?
Awareness of commonness/complexity/subtlety of dilemmas
Explain how willingness to expend cognitive effort is a therapist factor
Ability to tolerate ambiguity vs. the need for closure
How does adherence to guiding ethical principles affect MRs?
Adhering to principle of nonmaleficence (do no harm)
= refrain MORE from engaging in MR than one that adheres to principle of autonomy (emphasize client’s self-determination)
What are the gender differences that contribute to therapist factors?
Men: more risk favorable, focus on issues of justice, engage in more MRs with clients
Women: focus on relationship issues
Give an example of culture as a therapist factor
- possible clash/misunderstanding
- Personal space as polite/respectful (Viennese) VS cold/rejecting (USA)
Give an example of theoretical orientation as a therapist factor
- Humanistic therapists = highest frequency of MRs
- Psychodynamic therapists = lower frequencies
How do years of experience play a role as therapist factors?
Less than 10 years = see MR as less ethical than those with over 30 years
