Help change behaviors in the direction of your identified goals
Advise you
Identify options and provide outcomes and consequences of behavioral changes of failure to change
Be your friend
Be a partner and team member in problem solving. The difference between therapist and friend is a unilateral benefit and direction in daily living
Be a surrogate
Be a role model in terms of his or her interaction with you as a patient, but never replace partners you hose for parenting and for sexual interaction.
Change your life
Help yo find more control for your own destiny and see you own self-responsibilities within your life system
Be a source of strength
Help you identify your strengths and put them to work in solving problems you confront in daily living
Redo or correct the past
Accept life as a journey and not a destination (The neutrality rule). One will not predict the present or future based on the past.
Help become a new person
Help you integrate your behavior into a growing person who will develop through life and not achieve”health” but work towards wellness
find your identity
see your behavior more clearly by holding up an objective mirror to you, your life and your behaviors, and protect your options for change.
Make you feel better
Help you take responsibility for yourself, and see that in the final analysis you are own physician, psychotherapist. Your degree of wellness depends upon your assuming responsibility for coping more effectively with day-to-dya problems.
