Open-Ended Questions
introducing an idea by letting the patient respond
used when helping patient explore feelings or gain insight
ex: Nurse: “go on”, “and then”, “tell me about it”
Reflection
directing questions, feelings and ideas back to the pt
encourages pt to talk about their feelings and nurses maintain a non-judgmental approach
Ex: Pt: “I hate this place, i don’t belong here”
Nurse: “what do you think you should do?”
Restating
repeating what the pt said
lets the pt know what was heard
Ex: Patient: “I hate this place, I dont belong here”
Nurse: “you dont want to be here?”
Validation
clarifying the nurse’s understanding of the situation
Ex: Nurse: “let me see if I understand this correctly”
Exploring
examining certain ideas or experiences more fully
dont force pt to elaborate if they dont want to
Ex: Nurse: “tell me more about that”
Verbalize the Implied
verbalizing what the pt has hinted at or suggested
shows that you are listening to what pt is saying and pt can get feedback on how people hear them
Ex:be short and objective —> “I noticed you didnt change you clothes today”
Presenting Reality
indicate what is real
Ex: Pt: “the man in the corner is looking at me”
Nurse: “I don’t see anybody here but me and you”
Observation
stating to the pt what the nurse is observing
Ex: Nurse: “I notice that youre biting your lips”
Confrontation
present the pt with a different reality of the situation
Ex: Pt: “My best friend never calls me. She hates me.”
Nurse: “I was in the room yesterday when she called”
Silence
non-verbally expressing interest during an interaction
pt can focus on putting thoughts together
Ex: Pt: “I am angry”
Nurse: (silence)
Pt: “my wife had an affair”
