theory of planned behaviour Flashcards

Q

limitation:there are methodological issues with research

A

E:most of the research relies on self report measures. this may be problematic because self report may be victim to social desirability bias, where participants may reveal answers that appear less bad. another limitation is the use of correlation. correlational research does not equate to causation.
L:therefore, evidence behind TBH may not be strong enough to support context of addiction.

Q

strength:there is research support

A

E:for example Kelly surveyed 168 alcoholics and found that their intention to seek treatment correlated to their attitude and perceived behavioural control
E:hese findings support the TPB’s account of how individuals form an intention to change their addictive behaviour
L:therefore, there is research supporting the TPB as a theory of intention for changing addictive behaviour.

Q

strength: has informed interventions to help addicts change their behaviour.

A

E:practitioners can use the TPB to inform when an intervention might be used. for example if an addict is assessed as having a low intention to change their addictive behaviour, then the TPB would suggest that spending money on providing an intervention may be ineffective for that individual.
