prochaskas 6 stage model Flashcards

Q

strength: there is research support

A

E:velicer found that smoking cessation programs bases on prochaskas model were most successful. he did this through meta analysis research.
E:this demonstrates how prochaskas model can be useful to help challenge smokers addictive behaviours.additrionally, the use of a meta-analysis strengths its conclusions because it is more representative of the wider population of smokers.
L:therefore, there’s is strong research support for the application of Prochaska’s model to the process of changing addictive behaviour.

Q

limitation:t focuses on conscious decision-making

A

E:for example, in the preparation stage, addicts have consciously decided the benefits of quitting outweigh the negatives, and decide to consciously plan how to give up.
E:This approach to changing addictive behaviour neglects that patterns of addictive behaviour become entrenched and semi-automated through repeated reward.
L:therefore, the application of Prochaska’s model to changing addictive behaviours may be flawed as it ignores that addictive behaviours are not necessarily under conscious control.

Q

limitation:limited application for helping people reduce harmful behaviours in some addictions.

A

E:baunmann found that there was no significant differences between between problem drinkers randomly allocated to interventions
E:The finding suggests that Prochaska’s model may not be especially helpful in helping people change their addictive behaviour,it also provides an indirect challenge to the model’s validity, as we might expect that were the model valid, then interventions that made use of its ideas would be more effective than other interventions
