CBT for addiction Flashcards
limitation :treatment adherence
E:cuijpers found that drop out rates for CBT may be higher than other forms of therapy to reduce an addiction
E:this shows that if CBT is too demanding for some participants, CBT will not act as a truly effective method. drop-outs being 5x higher than other forms of therapy may be because it is demanding. (e.g. homework outside of sessions).
L:therefore, the drop out rates fro CBT indicates there may be issues with its effectiveness.
limitation: talking therapy may be cost effective
E:CBT involves sessions that are brought out using different methods and formats. this can be in the form of face to face/group or online sessions.
E:these can be expensive to deliver if it requires multiple sessions using highly skilled therapists.
E:talking therapies for addiction are the most expensive to deliver because they need more than one session and the therapist must be highly trained.funding for this may be limited
L:therefore, the expenses of CBT therapies may mean they are harder to use generally.
limitation: offers a reductions approach to treating addiction.
E:CBT focuses on irrational thinking as well as maladaptive behaviours.
E:this method is limited because it only focuses on addressing the issues using one level of explanation (cognitive) according to the biopsycholosocial model of addiction, the cognitive explanation is limited. as there is no single pathway to addiction . there are multiple levels of explanation such as neurochemical , cognitive and social factors.
L_therefore, CBT provides only a partial way of treating addictions.
