Theory of planned behavior Flashcards
Who proposed the theory of planned behavior and why?
Icek Ajzen (1985) to explain how people can exercise control over their behavior
What is the central concept of this theory?
This model was based on the idea that people are more likely to do what they intend to do.
What are the personal attitudes?
Balance of the person’s favorable and unfavorable attitudes towards own behavior.
What are the subjective norms?
Person’s beliefs about whether people who matter to them approve or disapprove of their behavior.
What does perceived behavioral control mean?
How much control a person believes they have over their own behavior.
Give one strength of theory of planned behavior
give an example of study to back your point
It can explain the process of addiction and other health-related behaviour. It can develop appropriate treatments to try and reduce the long-term effects of health problems like addiction.
Give one weakness of Theory of planned behavior
It does not take into consideration individual differences such as personality, age or social environment. For example, Penny (1996) found that those who had failed to quit smoking several times believed that they would not succeed in the future so they were less likely to try again. This shows that past experiences are important.
