What is the I Ching?
Earliest written record of yin and yang - a book of divination. The traditional would use it by tossing yarrow stalks or coins, and from that, creating trigrams.
Define QI
Qi is undefinable, but we define it as energy life energy vitality oxygen (science)
Where does human Qi come from ?
Breath of life (Zong Qi = gathering Qi)
What is pre-heaven Jing ?
Sperm + Egg = Male and Female energies
Constitution from parents
What is post-heaven Jing?
Comes when you're in the womb from your mother Nourishment Food and air Environment Nurture
Where does Kidney Jing come in ?
At puberty
Considered foundation of so many things
People can deplete their Kidney Jing, once it is depleted, you die.
Pre-heaven + post-heaven Jing =
Kidney Jing (essence)
Kidney stores ___.
Jing
Jing is the basis of:
Development Growth Reproduction Marrow Aging process Life span Fertility sexual function
Marrow fills the:
Spinal cord
Brain
Bones
The ___ is the sea of marrow:
Brain
Kidney Jing is responsible for our ___ ___
constitutional strength - it is your innate constitution
*you either have a strong constitution or a weak constitution
Jing is the potential however, we don’t rely on this. We barely use Jing. We use ___ & ___ until we run out. Then our body uses Jing. After Jing, we die.
Air, Food Qi
Yuan Qi/Original Qi is:
Jing/Essence
- Essence in the form of Qi
- Motive force of all body activities
- Flows in all channels
- The catalyst of Qi transformation
- If you want to turn one Qi into another, you need Yuan Qi
- Movement of Jing into Yuan Qi
- Jing sits there. When Jing/essence starts to get active, it becomes Yuan Qi
Any time we want to make blood, we’ll need __ Qi.
Yuan
How do we access Yuan Qi ?
Comes out of Yuan Source points -
Can access yuan qi at these source points
What is Zong Qi ?
“Gathering Qi”
- Gives energy to the voice
- The Qi of the chest
- Engine of Life
- Saw life in the chest (breath)
- Supports lungs and heart
Yuan Qi + Gu Qi =
Zong Qi (Gathering Qi)
What is Gu QI ?
“Food Qi/Rice Qi”
- adds something from the environment
- got Gu Qi from extraction of food from SP & ST
- Extract from food in digestion
- Becomes material basis for making blood
We can access someone’s Zong Qi by listening to their ___. Zong Qi gives warmth to ___/
Voice, Hands
Zong Qi + Yuan Qi =
Yang version
Yin version
Zhen Qi “True Qi”
*there is a Yin and a Yang part
(Yang)
Zhen Qi + Wei Qi (circulates through the skin and couli. Protectes, warms, moisturizes, regulates pores)
(Yin)
Zhen Qi + Ying Qi (“Nutritive Qi” flows in all channels, flows with blood. Nourishes organs and tissues)
You need ___ ___ every time you transform Qi.

- Middle Qi, Middle burner
- SP, ST
- Mostly digestion
Zheng Qi is:
“Upright QI”
The sum total of all the others, all our qi.
We talk about it in relation to pathogenic factor.
All the Qi that helps you stand straight, be alive, fight illness
Qi mechanism of LU:
Descends
If LU qi fails to descend:
Cough
SOB
Qi mechanism of LV:
Moves in all directions
Helps Qi move throughout the body
“THE GENERAL”
LV qi often gets stuck
If LV QI fails to move properly ?
- LQS:
- LV qi is not moving properly
- LV then can attack/invade other organs
- Nervousness, getting butterflies, n/v
Qi mechanism of ST:
Descends
If ST Qi fails to descend ?
N/V
burping
regurgitation
acid reflux
Sometimes related to LV Qi rebellion
Qi mechanism of SP:
Ascends
If SP fails to ascend ?
Prolapse
Def of blood
(extracts pure part of food and sends it up to heart, with the help of the LU, in order to make more blood)
- Helps keep blood in blood vessels
What is the function of the spleen in Western physiology ?
Filter/break down old RBCs
Part of lymphatic system
Includes insulin, digestive enzymes, and glucagon
*strong relationship to blood in both Eastern & Western
Qi mechanism of HT:
Descends
If HT fails to descend ?
Paliptations, insomnia, restlessness
- Heart Qi goes down to the uterus- stimulates ovulation and menstruation.
- Goes down to Kidney as well
- Communicates with both uterus and kidney
- HT fire/ Qi flows down to meet kidney water; kidney water/qi flows up to meet heart fire, kidney grasps the lu qi and then send s it back up as you exhale
- Kidney qi goes down to support urination
- Kidney, heart, lung operating on a vertical axis
What would happen if LV attacked the SP ?
It would send the qi downward, then it would mean diarrhea
If LV was stuck, it might make LI stuck which would lead to :
Constipation, irregular peristasis
How do we make blood ?
Eat food, food is received by ST, the SP extracts the pure part and with the help of the LU, ascends this to the HT, where it collects blood. HT governs the circulation of blood.
