Theories of Learning Flashcards
What is operant conditioning?
Learning using trial and error and rewards to condition the most effective response through practice
What is the cognitive theory of learning?
Learning by doing the whole skill and using problem solving to work out how to perform the skill
What does reinforcement do?
It strengthens the SR bond and therefore allows the performance more likely to be repeated.
What is positive and negative reinforcement?
Positive reinforcement is when a stimulus is given after the correct response usually being a reward or praise
Negative reinforcement is when an undesired stimulus is stopped after the correct response. For example the coach stops shouting
What are Thorndike’s 3 laws?

Law of effect- Positive outcome and satisfaction makes you continue
Law of readiness-You need to physically and mentally ready to perform the skill

Attention: The performer must be paying attention to the demonstration
Retention:The performer must be able to remember the demonstration
Motor reproduction: The performer must be able to physically and mentally be able to carry out the demonstration
Motivation:The perfomer needs to want to carry out the skill
