Theories of Health Behavior Change Flashcards
What is the transtheoretical model?
A readiness for change underlies the decision to engage in and maintain a health-promoting behavior
A health behavior change means a readiness for change
What is the IDA institute circle tool?
Used to determine where the patient is on the wheel of change
Have them choose one of the 5 statements that correlates with how they are feeling about hearing aids
What is the line tool?
Scale of 1-10
Best if used in the contemplation stage
Based on motivational interviewing
What is the box tool?
Help patient determine if benefit of taking action outweighs disadvantages
Helpful in preparation stage
Based on Health Belief Model
We will practice with this after we review the Health Belief Model
What is the health belief model?
Perception of disability, benefit, and barriers are thought to determine health behavior change
Action is taken when perceived benefits outweigh perceived barriers
What are the considers that a patient thinks about during the health belief model?
Patient perceives susceptibility to hearing loss (age, noise exposure, family history)
Patient perceives degree of severity of hearing loss (how much it interferes in day-to-day life)
Patient calculates benefit to taking action (will life improve (or not); consequences to not taking action)
Patient perceives their own self-efficacy (is this something they can do or manage?; what are the barriers and can they be overcome?)
Patient receives external cues to action (media, healthcare provider, family member, co-worker)
What are the questions that are asked in the box tool?
What are the advantages of continuing as you do today?
What are the disadvantages of continuing as you do today?
What are the disadvantages of taking action on your hearing?
What are the advantages of taking action on your hearing?
How do you use the box tool?
Have them fill out the first two questions
Ask them how they would like to move on from here
If they prefer to continue as they do today, provide them with information and encourage them to reflect on their hearing and return later if they wish
