Theories of Health and diseases Flashcards
humoral theory
older theory; (body fluid) black bile(tar-looking) yellow bile(throw up) these break down fat that body produces naturally, also includes blood and flem. too much blood? put leeches on you. Flem mucus is thicker, mostly yellow.
Demonic theory
If you are sick.. then you are possessed by the devil/evil spirit/ demon. Involved “trephining” medical procedure used in modern day medicine where you drill or saw a hole into the skull. “would cut skull to let demon out”
Religious theory
the reason why we are sick is because we are being punished by god
Magnetic Theory
rolf
Spectrochromography
interstial fluid is influenced by moon, star, planets. A treatment of getting fluids back aligned by putting magnets on the side of the body( not enough iron to make it work)
Ida “rolf”–deep muscle massage
put colored lights back and forth
Miasmatic theory
not just odors that identifies pathogens, comes from organic materials, odor is toxic from something decaying such as plants and animals. “If you breath in bad air you will get sick”
*female mosquitos carry malaria
Germ theory
“germs cause disease” pathogens are disease, not all germ cause diseases, Some germs make you sick, some help. Penicillin started
Christian Science Theory
The reason we are sick is metaphysical ( not germs or god) but beyond our physical route, something in the universe that makes you sick. The way you will get well is by exercising your faith, and prayers, no medication, no technology. Scientologist buy into this.
Psychosomatic theory
mind and body are connected, if one is affected the other one is too. Your mind struggling effects the body vice versa
Stress theory
That stress will make you sick, that stress can cause or make problems with your body.
What is stress?
The result of one’s perception of not having enough resources to cope with perceived situations from past, present, and future.
Who developed general adaptation syndrome (GAS)
Hans Selye. discovered theory while studying the influence of stress on people’s ability to cope and adapt
Stage of Alarm
(sympathetic nervous system) same as flight(getting away) or fight response
epinephrine hormone
Stage of resistance
(parasympathetic nervous system) has no affect on the adrenaline production, doesn’t create new adrenaline
Stage of Exhaustion
(cellular and systemic breakdown. body cant take it. homeostasis, resilience. stroke/ heart attack
**Ecologic theory
begins with 1947 WHO definition, includes the dimensions of health, determinants of health, and characteristics of health
