Theories of Acids and Bases Flashcards
What was Lavoisier’s Principle?
Lavoisier thought that an acid was a compound made from a non-metal and oxygen. He was wrong because the strong acid HCL was discovered which had no oxygen
What was Arrhenius’s principle?
Arrhenius believed that acids proud H+ ions and anions in aqueous solutions, and bases produce OH- ions and cations. He also thought that H+ ion and OH- ion could make the water and the cation and anion would make salt. However, he did not account for reactions without water and bases without the OH-.
Who accepts and who donates?
Acids donate H+ proton and bases accept them.
What are the conjugate acid-base pairs?
An acid in the forward direction will donate its H+ ion and will become a conjugate base. A base in the forward direction will accept the H+ ion and become a conjugate acid.
What is Amphiprotic?
Amphriprotic is a substance that can act as a base and an acid. (ex. water)
What is Amphoteric?
Amphoteric is a substance that can act as an acid and base but also include reactions that do not involve proton transfer.
