Reactions of Acids and Bases Flashcards
1
Q
What are the Three Main Acid Reactions?
A
- Acid + metal –> salt + hydrogen gas
- Acid + metal oxide –> salt + water
- Acid + carbonate –> salt + water + carbon dioxide
2
Q
What is effervescence?
A
It is when a reaction involves a gas being released.
3
Q
How do you Identify the parent acid and base?
A
You take the salt produced from the reaction and split it into its anion/cation.
Ex. Na2SO4 (salt) –> Na+ + SO4 -2
You then add Hydrogen ion and Hydroxide ions to the opposite charge
Ex. Na+ and OH- go together and SO4- and H+ go together
make sure to balance out charges
To balance out the charge, 2 H+ ions are needed for SO4 because SO4 has 2- charge.
Therefore, NaOH is the parent base and H2SO4 is the parent acid.
