Theories & Hypotheses/ Constrcts & Variables Flashcards
FACT
Something that is 100% true
THEORY
Collection of propositions or hypotheses that attempt to explain a set of observed phenomena
HYPOTHESES
A clear explanation for an observed phenomenon
CONSTRUCT
Building blocks of theories
Theoretical concepts used as descriptive explanations
Don’t directly indicate a mean by which they can be measured
Nominal data
Category membership
Numbers serve as labels don’t indicate numerical relaitonship (gender, colour, etc.)
Example: Numbers assigned to runners
Ordinal data
data can be ranked along a continuum
intervals between ranks aren’t equal
Interval data
Intervals are equal but no true 0 point
Ratio data
highest level of data, equal intervals and a true 0 point
Between subject design
Independent groups
Ps each exposed to one level of the IV
Within subject design
Repeated measures
Ps exposed to all levels of the IV
Factorial design
Experimental design with 2 or more IVs
Fully independent factorial design(between subjects)
Each group tested in 1 level of the IV
Fully Repeated Measures Factorial Design (within subjects)
Each Ps takes part in all experimental conditions
Factorial Mixed Design
Always contains at least:
1. 1 or more within subject IVs
2. 1 or more between subject IVs
Each Pt takes part in all levels of within subject and between subject IVs
Conceptual definition
Deals with functiationality of conscious behaviour and how it can be used and developed
