A
1) asthma
2) COPD
3) other lung conditions caused by reversible airflow obstruction

A
- inhibits phosphodiesterase (PDE)
- this decreases the hydrolysis of cAMP = increases amount of cAMP
- increases bronchodilation

Theophylline - Adverse effects
A
headache,
nausea, stomach upset, or vomiting
not sleeping well
increased heart rate
skin rash
seizures.

Theophylline - contraindications and cautions
A
Cardiac arrhythmias or other cardiac disease
elderly (increased plasma-theophylline concentration)
epilepsy
hypertension
peptic ulcer; risk of hypokalaemia; thyroid disorder
