Q

Oxygen - adverse effects

A

The most common adverse effects of oxygen are related to the delivery device (e.g. the discomfort of a face mask; nasal cannulae may be more comfortable) or its lack of water vapour (dry throat; humidification may improve this).

hyperoxaemia may also be harmful

Q

Oxygen - caution

A

ensure to monitor the patients oxygen levels

1) Caution using oxygen in those with type-2 resp failure .

oxygen targets dependent on patient - for example 94-98% in most patients but 88-92% in those with chronic type 2 respiratory failure (e.g.- those with severe COPD)

2) fire risk if exposed to heat source or naked flame (including smoking)

Q

Oxygen - monitoring

A

Frequent SpO2 monitoring is essential in all patients receiving oxygen for acute illness. The device and/or flow rate should be adjusted as necessary to keep the SpO2 within the target range.

In addition, arterial blood gas measurement is essential in patients with critical illness; those with chronic type 2 respiratory failure or those at risk of hypercapnoea; and those with hypoxaemia that is unexpected, progressive, or disproportionate to their illness.
