What is the Catholic Church’s teaching on religious freedom?
The Church teaches that religious freedom is a fundamental human right (Dignitaries Humanae) but must be exercised in harmony with truth and moral responsibility.
What does idolatry look like historically?
Worship of false gods, statues, or nature (Baal, golden calf)
What does idolatry look like today?
Obsession with money, power, celebrities, or martial goods over god
What is superstition?
Superstition is attributing supernatural power to rituals, objects, or omens rather than trusting in God
What is wrong with superstition
It is wrong because it distorts true faith and leads away from divine providence
What is divination? How is it different than prayer?
Divination is attempting to predict the future through occult meanings. Prayer is a direct conservation w/ God, seeking his will, not hidden knowledge.
What are four expressions of irreligion?
Sacrilege: disrespecting sacred objects or places
Simony: buying or selling spiritual goods
Atheism: denying God’s existence
Agnosticism: claiming God’s existence is unknowable
Compare and contrast the 3rd commandment as practiced in the Old Testament and by modern Christian
Old Testament: strict Sabbath rest on Saturday, no work at all.
Modern Christians: worship and rest on Sunday, but not as rigidly enforced.
What are the obligations of the 3rd Commandment for Catholics
Catholics must attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation, rest from unnecessary work, and dedicate time to worship and charity.
