Q

Why is the order of initiation different in the West and East?

A
  1. Presence of Bishop (it became easier in the west for a priest to do baptism/eucharist before)
  2. Development of Catechesis (the west came to emphasize gradual initiation)
  3. Theological Emphasis (in the west confirmation is seen as a completion of Baptism and a strengthening; east keeps up old traditions.

Q

Who is Melchizedek? How does he prefigure the Eucharist?

A

Melchizedek was the King of Salem, El Elyon (Priest on high), and his name meant King of Righteousness.

He brings out Bread and Wine and blesses Abraham

Prefigures the Eucharist through his offering of Bread and Wine…like the Last Supper. He offers Abraham nourishment, while Christ offers his followers spiritual nourishment. He is also a king and priest, just like Jesus is king of kings and high priest. He is ALSO the eternal Priest much like Christ.

Q

What is the connection between the Biblical Passover and the Eucharist?

A

Passover in Exodus includes sacrificing a spotless lamb, eating the lamb’s flesh, act was a way of protecting themselves from the angel of death.

Eucharist includes Christ as the sacrificial lamb, we eat his body (body of Lamb) and drink his blood (blood on the door), and are thus joined in the New Covenant (saved from Death)

What are the two species of the Eucharist? How is God present in both of them?

A

The two species of the Eucharist are the Bread and Wine. God is fully present in both the bread and the wine. God’s presence in both is full–symbolizes our Unity with Christ through his sacrifice and it encourages full participation in the sacrament.

15
Q

How is the Eucharist a sacrifice? How does it relate to our salvation? How is Christ’s Paschal Mystery proclaimed and made present in the sacrament?

A

The Eucharist is a sacrifice because it is the real, present version of Christ’s one-time sacrifice.

It relates to our salvation because through participation in the Eucharist we participate in the fruits of Christ’s sacrifice, receive grace, and ultimately salvation.

The Paschal Mystery is made present in the sacrament by proclaiming and making present his passion. The Eucharist allows the faithful toe encounter Christ’s love and redemption.
