The divided self
A
Jekyll splits himself into two people so he can live two separate lives. Being Jekyll is his public self whereas being Hyde he’s more private and he gets to express his evil passions without being judged for it because of his upper class as Jekyll.

A
Jekyll loses cont ok of constantly changing into Hyde. We later on discover in chapter 10 that the only way Jekyll can stop this is to kill him self.

A
Jekyll is supposed to be a man of upper class so he should behave like a gentlemen which is why it shocks the readers that he turns out to have such a dark side of him.
